Food for Jamaicans
Climate change in Jamaica is forcing small-scale food producers out of business, leading to rising unemployment, poverty and food insecurity. At Eloise Hylton Inc, we helps resolve this crisis by empowering struggling farmers, women, youth and people with disabilities to start agricultural enterprises. This program is providing access to financing, agricultural technology, training, technical assistance and secure markets.
Challenge
Jamaica's agricultural sector and local economies have been hit hard by severe climate events, with unemployed food producers lacking business opportunities, youth uninterested in pursuing traditional farming, and insufficient production to provide food security. Eloise Hylton is equipping small-scale farmers to grow and sell more food locally, earn sustainable livelihoods and provide economic development opportunities for their communities while adapting to climate-change realities.
Solution
The program will empower small-scale producers by: Establishing viable agri-businesses through access to climate-smart agriculture technology, financing and markets; Providing hands-on training and technical assistance on agriculture technology, business planning/marketing and financial management; Delivering training and capacity-building workshops for future agriculture trainers to ensure the sustainability of the program; and Connecting small producers to stable markets for their goods.
Long-Term Impact
Your donation will help deliver training/resources to 130 small-scale Jamaican producers over 4 years to start climate-smart agriculture farming businesses. You will enable our volunteer experts to provide farmers with technical training, help finding markets for their produce, and access to financing to grow their enterprises. Together, we will empower small farmers, women, youth and people with disabilities to develop climate change-resilient enterprises to transform their lives and the economy.
